The neighbourhood of Scarboro is a designed district from 1910. At the turn of the 20th century, CPR’s land commissioner worked with the Olmsted firm—a renowned landscape architecture firm celebrated for its design of Central Park in New York City, the US Capitol Grounds and Niagara Falls—to design a special suburb in Calgary in response to Scarboro’s unique topography. Situated on a hilltop, this inner-city neighbourhood retains its original design of gracefully curved, tree-lined streets to preserve the natural beauty of the land. Many residences in Scarboro display their original design and detailing from the 1910s and 1920s, and many of the more recent buildings are of sympathetic design. Scarboro is one of only three fully executed Olmsted-designed suburbs in all of Canada.
